Destination IAA: Cummins unveils new technology for zero-emissions power solutions


Columbus, India – (work wire) — Cummins Inc (NYSE: CMI) is showcasing its zero-emission technologies program this week at IAA Transportation, the world’s largest mobility fair, in Hanover, Germany. A suite of new Cummins technologies and recently acquired Meritor ePowertrain technologies are available to the public together for the first time. With more than a century of experience as a global energy leader, Cummins solidifies its commitment to providing comprehensive zero-emissions technology on a global scale.

One of the major zero-emission Cummins products disclosed at the IAA is the fourth generation hydrogen fuel cell engine. Designed to meet the duty cycle, performance and packaging requirements of trucks and medium and heavy buses, the fuel cell technology is available in dual 135 kW and 270 kW units.

Scania Europe and Daimler Trucks North America announced their collaboration with Cummins to develop and integrate next-generation fuel cell engines into their experimental vehicles. The systems use fourth-generation variable pressure technology to provide higher energy density, energy knots and operating temperatures to facilitate system integration into vehicles. It also features robust duty cycle efficiency and durability for a lower total cost of ownership.

IAA attendees will also get a first glimpse of a transmission assembled with the newly introduced Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery pack, Meritor’s 17xe ePowertrain and Meritor’s Power Control and Accessory System (PCAS). Cummins recently added ePowertain and PCAS solutions to its portfolio through its acquisition of Meritor. ePowertrain takes advantage of market-leading technologies in the hub, motor and inverter, delivering performance, efficiency and packaging benefits at a competitive cost. In addition, PCAS provides power when needed and control of necessary subsystems while reducing package size and simplifying integration.

Cummins is adding the LFP battery to its line of lithium-ion batteries to expand support for electrified commercial vehicle applications. The LFP solution gives customers access to faster charging and longer-lasting batteries, targeting the mid-size truck and school bus markets. Using a multiple chemical strategy, Cummins is in a position to expand its manufacturing capacity further and diversify its supply chain, providing customers with more cost-effective electrification solutions.

Cummins’ portfolio includes four batteries, each targeting a different duty cycle and use case and complementing each other. In addition to the LFP option, this includes three nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries – the BP95E, BP74E and BP30E. The BP95E is Cummins’ next generation solution that prioritizes greater power density in applications for customers who require more weight-sensitive solutions or have longer ranges. Ideal for meeting space-constrained applications and demanding requirements, the BP74E is the foundation for innovation and advancement in Cummins’ BEV.
