Five high school wrestlers in the county are undefeated on the first day of competition in the Pat Lovell Holiday Wrestling Classic at Aptos High on Tuesday.
Santa Cruz sophomore Palm Letona (113 lbs.), Harbor junior Gerardo Trinidad (120), Santa Cruz junior Daniel Evert (132), Monta Vista sophomore Christian Recreation (138), and Harbor senior Diallo Thomas (152) all hit ) quarter-finals, which will take place on Wednesday morning in Aptos.
Letona, who won both of his pinball matches, faces Frontier freshman Nick Agerton next. Agerton is ranked No. 30 in the state.
Trinidad, who won a 9-7, 14-6 big decision, faces John H. Pittman linebacker Ronaldo Wilharm.
Evert, who won the pin and 10-8, faces Oakdale senior Samuel Neely, ranked No. 43 in the state.
Resurreccion, who won with a 20-4 fall technical and pinfall victory, faces senior Pittsman Alejandro Talamante, ranked No. 28 in the state.
Thomas, who posted a pair of pins in 30 seconds or less, faces Carlmont’s Luke Peasley, the No. 37 seed in the state.
Oakdale (124.5 points) leads the 57-team event after day one, with Merced’s Golden Valley (112) in second, and John H. Pittman (107) in third. Gilroy (75.5) is in seventh place and is the top school from the Central Coast Division.
Boys basketball
Los Gatos 61, Sockwell 51: Braylon Noble scored all of his team-high 16 points in the second half of the Knights’ opening round game of the ninth annual Aptos High/Santa Cruz Warriors NorCal contest at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Tuesday.
Nico Ramirez scored 12 points for the Knights and Chance Croslin 11 points.
Sockwell Pioneer faces off against Sockwell in the consolation semifinal at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
Girls basketball
Lake Wilmerding 67, Sockwell 28: Lily Thayer scored 10 points for the Knights in their opening round loss at the 9th annual Aptos High/Santa Cruz Warriors Norcal Invitational at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Tuesday.
Gianna Winterholder scored eight points for the Knights.
He faces American Sockwell in the consolation semifinal at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.
Buchanan 76, Aptos 14: Laurel Southall had six points and five rebounds as the Mariners dropped the game opener in the 9th Annual Aptos High/Santa Cruz Warriors NorCal Invitational at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Tuesday.
Abby Sherwood scored four points and eight rebounds for the Mariners (2-9).
The Bears (13-2) are two years removed from winning the CIF SoCal Regional 3-A title.
Aptos faces Alameda in the consolation semi-finals at Kaizer Permanente Arena on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.
Girls soccer
Piedmont Hills 1, at Aptos 0: The Mariners missed a goal in the 74th minute of Tuesday’s non-league loss.
Goaltender Alessandra Zúñiga made four saves for the Mariners.
The Mariners (4-3-1) are scheduled to open the Santa Cruz Coast Sports League game in Sockwell (3-3-0) Jan. 3 at 5 p.m., though the game will likely be rescheduled.
