JEFFERSONVILLE, Vt. (WCAX) — Skiers and riders hit the mountain at Smugglers’ Notch Resort in Jeffersonville on Monday.
For some, the week off takes them home to their favorite terrain.
“Nothing honestly beats home mountain for anyone. It’s especially special because I’ve been skiing here forever,” said Seamus King of Underhill.
For some, it’s a classic Vermont winter getaway.
“I learned to ski here, so it’s always good to be able to ski again,” said New Jersey native Ally Loeb.
“This is when everyone gets together. Yesterday, we went out with the six of us and had the mountain to ourselves and we were like, Wahoo! Like the real vacation feeling,” said Susan Hopmans of New Jersey.
But Monday was a different story.
“Yes, the parking lots are full but the lines move quickly,” Hopmans said.
As people check into their rooms and head out to ski, the resort says it’s shaping up to be a busy week of vacation.
“This is the start of a great week. Steve Colkey of Smugglers’ Notch Resort said.
This appears to be true at the state level. Ski Vermont said, “Vermont’s ski areas offer booking and reservation prices at or above what they would expect at this time of year.” As for conditions, “the snowfall for the season is within the 10-year average for this time of year.”
Resorts like Smuggs are busy making snow to open up more trails after warming up last week.
“When the weather gets warm like it did on Friday, we’ll come back really fast with snowmaking trails,” Kulkey said.
It’s good news for those who hit the mountain.
“Nothing better, just let the body loosen up on the slopes and start bombing away,” said Tyler Gaetano of New Jersey.
“It feels great,” King said. “The cold weather is getting a bit colder but now I’m having some fun!”
