Portland, ore – (work wire) — While summer vacations may have earned their rightful place on the annual outlook list, there’s just something special about fall travel that hits the sweet spot among the summer crowds and the chill of winter looming. With this in mind, Vacasa (Nasdaq: VCSA), North America’s leading vacation rental management platform, has teamed up with Allison + Partners Research to better understand how this season’s journey has looked differently compared to years — and seasons — past.
Fast weekend trips may be preferred because the days get shorter, but that doesn’t mean that vacation days won’t be used: 58% of respondents plan to take a vacation during the fall 2022 season and 72% say they plan to travel more frequently. in 2021. And while summer travel is still prevalent, many prefer fall holidays because the weather is more perfect (34%), less crowded (23%), and/or because they are less crowded now than summer (22%). Where are they headed? Vacasa data reveals five destinations that are making notable year-over-year gains for fall bookings—from Hawaiian beaches to Lake Tahoe shores to the woods of northern Wisconsin—proving that people look for diversity during this great seasonal spot.
So, as people flock to fall travel, here’s a look at more key findings from Vacasa’s fall travel trends for 2022, released today:
Work flexibility continues to factor into seasonal travel plans: 76% of those working on a hybrid or all-remote format plan to move away this fall—but that’s not the only group more inclined to travel. Gen Z and Millennials combined are more likely to have travel plans this fall (64% vs. 50%) than the older generations — Gen X and Boomers — and the same is true for parents than non-parents (63% vs. 50%).
Nearly 4 in 5 fall travelers plan to travel domestically (79%) – a slight increase from summer 2022 (74%). And of those who go to a destination within the United States, 46% plan to stay closer to home, traveling nearly 300 miles or less.
Nearly two-thirds of travelers in the fall plan to take a quick weekend trip (2 nights or less) this season (64%) — nearly double those who planned to do so in a similar question asked in Summer 2022 (33%) and nearly twice as many than three times those who planned to do so in a similar question asked in fall/early winter 2021 (22%).
More weekends can mean more spontaneity, too. Half of travelers are currently booking/planning their next fall trip(s) (50%), while nearly a quarter say they are more likely to book a vacation at the last minute (24%).
Those who aren’t planning to travel for vacation this fall say they are trying instead to save money (37%), aren’t currently in a financial position to take a vacation (36%), or are waiting for fuel prices to drop. (27%).
Meanwhile, COVID-19 fears continue to decline throughout the season as a reason not to travel: 16% of non-travelers cited the pandemic as a reason not to travel this fall, compared to 20% of respondents in summer 2022 and 35% in spring 2022.
