The unusually calm hurricane season in the Atlantic was turned upside down this weekend as Hurricane Fiona battered Puerto Rico with devastating winds and nearly 30 inches of rain in some locations.
Multiple deaths were reported and emergency responders rescued about 1,000 people. Puerto Rico’s governor, Pedro Pierluisi, said the damage to urban areas was “catastrophic” and rain was expected there to continue into Tuesday evening. The storm continued over the Dominican Republic on Monday and is expected to target the Turks and Caicos Islands.
